Background and Basics

Professional technology scouting is time consuming and resource-intensive. Additionally, new key technologies appear very fast. It is more and more difficult to track latest results. Big chances for next innovations are seen in cross-industry approaches. That means great solution from one industry (e.g. automotive) could be very innovative for another industry (e.g. medical).

Scouting4Innovations is a new technology scouting concept showing very latest results in the field of miniaturized sensors, actuators and systems. One example is demonstrated for low cost depth sensors for industrial applications. The technology is well known from gesture recognition for games console (Kinect and others) as well as PC. This low cost components opens new possibilities for next product, process or service innovations.

Analysing the core technology of low cost and miniaturised depth sensors shows a lot of possibilies for non-consumer applications in fixed or mobile applications.

Concept and Solution

Some example can be seen in new automation and process controls or 3D-scanner systems – also of interest in combination with Rapid Prototying and Manufacturing processes. Additionally autonomous interaction with users in the home and living area for light or heating control (e.g. for reduced energy consumption) could be one focus.

In the medical industry it is important to have sterile applications. Thus interacting with systems without touching anything is quite interesting. Finally new navigation processes for people (such as pedestrian or indoor navigation) as well as for robots seem to be a very economic way using this technology.

Status and Outlook

In summary there are many features which makes this technology quite intesting for industrial applications. Nevertheless it has to be analysed in detail which performance can be achieved in future.

Thus, we set up a trend report for Scouting4Innovations to this topic which analyses technological and economic details with many ideas, concepts and solutions for innovative products, process control and services.
